I served under Willie as a private, corporal and then captain of the 13th Louisiana Volunteer Infantry. He was the best field commander I've ever seen and a genuinely nice man. He knew everyone in the bat tat by name and visited every campfire. I never heard anyone say a disparaging word about him. It is a sad time in the hobby with his loss. Thomas E. I worked under Willie at the Atwood’s in McAlester. He was always smiling and in a good mood. He often had to scold me as I was just entering adulthood and I was still shaking off my youthful stubbornness. He always did so in a way to teach responsibility and respect. I’ll never forget the way he lit up when Lil Will would come in and I’d take him to the break room to talk about Batman and Ben 10. He will be missed.
Willie was my daughters Father in Law. For 23 years I’ve always enjoyed the opportunity to visit with Willie. As I traveled some, I would always stop at Atwood’s in McAlester and visit, or we would steal away to lunch at a diner nearby. Willie was Pe Pa and I was Pa Pa, to Kinsley and Kase.
