Virgil Coker's Obituary
Virgil Coker, longtime Wilson Community resident, died Thursday afternoon, October 28, 2010 at the age of 83. Virgil was born May 10, 1927 in Pharoah, Oklahoma to William B. and Essie Hattie(Smith) Coker. Virgil graduated from Morris High School and served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He married Gladys “Sue” Watts on December 24, 1947 in Dewar. Virgil spent his life working as a farmer and rancher, and with his love of woodworking, also worked in carpentry for many years. He was a member and past Deacon of the Wilson Baptist Church and a member of the Gideons. Virgil was always active and concerned about his community where he resided for 60 years. He was a member of the Oklahoma and Okmulgee County Cattleman’s Association, past board member of the Okmulgee County Farm Bureau, the Farmer’s Home Administration, the Wilson School Board, the Water Board, and the Excise Board for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Gladys “Sue” Coker on June 14, 2005.
Virgil is survived by one son, Larry Coker and his wife Anna of the Wilson Community; two daughters, Linda Randleman and husband Roger of Pryor, Oklahoma; Elizabeth Coker of Henryetta, Oklahoma; granddaughter Michelle Wriker and husband Jeff and daughter Destiny of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; granddaughter Melisa Davenport and husband Rick of Stillwater and their children Trevor, Garrett, and Macy; granddaughter Kelly Beattie and husband Rob of Pryor, Oklahoma and their children Brock, Saige, and Emree; grandson Jeff Randleman and wife LaToya and their children Olivia and Jaxson; grandson Dusty Jestice of Henryetta, Oklahoma; grandson Matthew Whisman and wife Tiffany of Warminster, Pennsylvania and their sons Loukas and Matthew Ross, Jr.; one sister Peggy McCarroll of Hartshorne, Oklahoma; one brother Paul Coker and wife Barbara of Oktaha, Oklahoma and numerous nephews, nieces, and friends.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday, November 1, 2010 at the Wilson Baptist Church with Reverends Mark Milligan and Don Walker officiating. Interment will follow in the Wilson Salt Creek Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Lee Winn, Johnnie Lee, Mike Witt, Ralph Fisher, Rick Duncan and Larry Peavler. Honorary Casketbearers will be Carroll Brown, Jack McManus, Rock Ennis, Danny Kennedy and the Okmulgee County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. Friends may visit the funeral home on Sunday from 1-6 P.M. and the family will receive friends from 2-4 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Coker’s name to the Gideons International, in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Okmulgee.
