Robert Garth Abbott's Obituary
Robert G. Abbott, known to everyone as Bob, passed away after a short battle with cancer on September 27, 2025. He was 71. Bob was born on October 11, 1953, to Ward and Helen (Scott) Abbott in Tama County, Iowa. He graduated from North Winneshiek High School in rural Decorah, Iowa in 1972. On May 3, 1975, he married Cheryl Quinnell. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this year. Bob was a machinist at Covington Aircraft, and in 2020 he retired from Covington after 39 years. He filled his retirement days doing odd jobs at the church, going to all of his grandkids' activities, restoring his old John Deere tractor, doing jigsaw puzzles, and working outside. He enjoyed playing games of any kind and was known to never turn down a bowl of ice cream. Every year he looked forward to going to the July 4th Abbott reunion and car cruise, where his Mustang was a staple. Bob was a member of Morris First Baptist Church where he faithfully served in several capacities.
Bob is survived by his wife, Cheryl, three children Eric and wife Kim, Tina Gehring and husband Jeff, and Kari Oglesby and husband Jonny. Six grandchildren, Brayley Abbott, Natalie Gehring, Nicole Gehring, Kyle Oglesby, Amy Gehring, and Tyler Oglesby. Siblings, Dean, Ron, Barbara, Ralph, Coleen, Paul, Tim, Beth, Joyce, Doug and Tom, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Ward and Helen Abbott, brothers, Wendell and Loren, and his granddaughter, Shelby Abbott.
Services for Bob will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Morris, Oklahoma with Pastor Robby Bowen officiating. Interment will follow in the Morris Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Blaine Abbott, Luke Abbott, Aaron Abbott, Mike Barron, David Long, Keith Hurt, and Jimmy Floyd.
