Neva Ruth Freeman's Obituary
Neva Ruth Johnson Freeman was born July 23, 1922 to Verna Mae Bowman Johnson and Carl Albert Johnson. She had two sisters Eleanor Holding and Reba Paisley. She was born in Clearwater, Kansas and lived the first part of her life there. She attended her first schooling through high school in Clearwater.
She married Vernon Lloyd Freeman on April 26, 1942. They had a daughter Carol Ann in 1943. They had a daughter Betty Jo and son Ronald Lloyd who were RH negative babies and they didn’t survive. They also had a 6 month baby that was miscarried.
In 1957 they moved to California. She attended College of Sequoia in Visalia, California to start getting her teaching degree. In 1964 they moved back to Clearwater and she attended Friends University in Wichita. She got her teaching degree and taught in Haysville and Parsons, Kansas.
Then they moved to Okmulgee in 1977 and built their house in Okmulgee. She taught school in Okmulgee at Westside and Eastside before retiring. Then she substituted in area schools until she was in her 70s. She taught her great-grandkids.
She was a member of the Nuyaka Baptist Church, Dripping Springs Home Extension and the First National Priority Club.
She and Vernon enjoyed going to the senior citizens dances in Okmulgee.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three of her children.
Survivors include her daughter Carol McAfee and husband Tommy, of Okmulgee. Also three grandchildren: Lori Edmundson and fiancé Michael Sellers, Tom McAfee, Jr. and Karla Wilson and husband Darrell. She has five great grandkids: Amanda, Dalton, BreAnne, Audrey Wilson and Chance Edmundson. One great-great grandchild Cheslee Farrow. She has several step-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, extended family and a host of friends.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Monday, January 20, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home in Okmulgee. Friends may see her on Sunday from 2-6 PM with the family present to greet guests from 2-3 PM. Interment will be in Clearwater, Kansas at the Clearwater Cemetery on Tuesday at 2:00 PM.
