Muriel E. Shackelford's Obituary
Muriel E. Shackelford, 89, lifelong resident of Okmulgee, died on Wednesday in Okmulgee. She was born in Okmulgee to Robert and Jane (Buckner) Clarkson on July 23, 1921. She graduated from Morris High School in 1939 and had her nurses training at Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She married Thomas F. Shackelford, Jr. in Okmulgee on January 21, 1950. Muriel was a Registered Nurse and retired from the State of Oklahoma. Her memberships included First Presbyterian Church her Circle Group there and was in charge of the Bereavement committee for a time, American Legion Auxiliary, AARP, Oklahoma State Nurses Association and the Okmulgee Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she was a life member. Her husband Thomas F. Shackelford, Jr. and parents, siblings Edith Wirick, Vetus and Bobby Clarkson preceded her in death.
Her survivors include her daughter Dr. Jane and husband Rev. Dr. Brian Grassley of Garden City, Idaho, a son Tom Shackelford of Alexandria, Virginia, grandchildren Rachel Grassley Young and her husband Josh, Tim and his wife Jenny Grassley, Jeff Grassley and fiancé Ashley, nephew John Clarkson, nieces Nancy Clarkson Kirby and Mary Shackelford Schoppaul.
Graveside services will be on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 3;30 pm at the Okmulgee Cemetery under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials in Muriel’s name be made to First Presbyterian Church, 401 S. Seminole, Okmulgee, Oklahoma 74447. Condolences may be made at mcclendon-winters.com.
