Melba F. Chastain's Obituary
Melba Fern Chastain, lifelong Morris resident, passed away Friday, June 12, 2026, in Okmulgee at ninety-three years of age. Melba was born Friday, December 9, 1932, in Morris to the late Zelan and Ola Faye (Hunter) Vaughan. She graduated from Morris High School in 1950 and married the love of her life, Harold "Gene" Chastain on January 26, 1951. Her first job was at the S.H. Kress Department Store in Okmulgee followed by a job at the Okmulgee Stockyards. Soon after she began a career at Morris State Bank that spanned over four decades, retiring in 1998. Melba was a lifelong faithful member of the United Pentecostal Church of Morris where she served as the church secretary for fifty-five years. She loved attending church and being with her church family.
Melba was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Survivors include her son, Mike Chastain and wife Helen and Mark Chastain and wife Karla, all of Morris, granddaughters, Kelly Buell and husband Chris of Wilson, Kaylee Kennedy and husband Cody of Okmulgee and Meghan Arnold and husband Jarrett of Morris, great grandchildren, Lily, Gavin, Brielle, Kassidy, Kennedy, Jaxton and Edie, her brother, Keith Vaughan and wife Phyllis of Stillwater and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service to honor Melba's life will be held 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at the United Pentecostal Church of Morris with Reverends Freddie Waldrep and Justin Monks officiating. Interment will follow in the Morris Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Larry Vaughan, Kent Brill, Bill Wasson, Randall Vaughan, Eric Wetzel and David Trammell.
