George "Sonny" Coser, Jr.'s Obituary
George “Sonny” Coser, Jr., a resident of Mounds, passed away Tuesday morning, December 6, 2022 at seventy-four years of age. He was born March 5, 1948 in Tulsa to the late George S. Coser, Sr. and Stella (Halley) Coser. Sonny grew up in Okmulgee and graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1966. He then earned his Associates Degree at Haskell Indian Junior College. Sonny married Judy Coser on August 2, 1989 in McLoud, Oklahoma.
Sonny worked for Bendix Corporation in Kansas City, Missouri, Jack Brown Adolescent Treatment Center in Tahlequah, L.E. Rader Juvenile Detention Center in Sand Springs, and Sac and Fox Nation Juvenile Detention Center in Stroud, where he provided drug and alcohol counseling. Sonny was a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Cussetah Tribal Town and the Fox Clan. He fluently spoke Creek and was a teacher of the language and history. He also sang and danced at Pow-Wows and Stomp Dances. Sonny was a member of the Redland Drum Group and Big Cussetah United Methodist Church in Morris. He was an avid OU fan.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Geneva Wallace and Juanita Kelley, uncle, Joe Halley and a nephew, Joe Don Waters.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Coser, children, Brenda Claw and husband Duane and Genassa White and husband Jonathon, siblings, Nettie Coser Harjo, Wayne Coser, Dr. Pete Coser and Georgiann Frye. Four grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews that were cherished.
A wake service will be held 7:00 P.M. Thursday, December 8, 2022 at Big Cussetah United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Friday, December 9, 2022 at the Big Cussetah United Methodist Church with interment following in the Big Cussetah Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Terrence Harjo, C.J. Harjo, Pete Coser, Jr., Jono Thompson, Paul Thompson, Jerimah Wittman, Sonte Lena and Brad Smith.
