Duane was one of the best people I've ever known. His heart was always generous but his mind was struggling. His last fb post was a song from Jelly Roll:
"I am not okay. I'm barely getting by. I'm losing track of days, and losing sleep at night. I am not okay. I'm hanging on the rails, so if you say I'm fine, just know I learned to hide it well. I know I can't be the only one who's holding on for dear life. But God knows I know, when it's all said and done, I'm not okay, but it's all gonna be alright. It's not okay, but we're all gonna be alright. I woke up today, I almost stayed in bed, had the devil on my back and voices in my head. Some days it ain't all bad, some days it all gets worse. Some days, I swear, I'm better off layin' in that dirt. I know I cant be the only one, who's holding on for dear life. But God knows, I know, when it's all said and done, I'm not okay. But it's all gonna be alright. It's not OK, But we're all gonna be alright."
My heart is broken. I didn't know Duane was struggling this deeply and darkly. They always say hind sight is 20/20. ALL of us who knew and loved Duane are going to say "what if I had done this", or "I should/could have done this/that." But having full vision now doesn't change anything. Being angry or passing blame doesn't bring Duane back. And it takes away from what Duane would have wanted. All I know is Duane would have NEVER wanted to be the reason for someone else's pain or sadness. That just wasn't something that was in his heart. As the song says, he may have had "the devil on his back" during life, but now he is sitting high in the arms of God. There are no longer scary voices in his head, instead, there are songs and laughter as he is embraced by our mom, dad, and sister Sharon. Now, he IS going to be alright. We will all miss you little brother. Go rest in peace...until we meet again.
