Bertha Grice's Obituary
Mary Lou Bertha Grice died in Tulsa on Wednesday, March 07, 2012 at 91 years of age. Bertha was born on October 20, 1920 in Texarkana, Texas to Pleas and Minnie (Mosley) Shipp. While an infant, her family moved to the Hickory Community in Murray County where she graduated from High School. After two years at Murray State College she transferred to Oklahoma State University, graduating in 1942. On November 22, 1944 in Roff, Oklahoma she married Ed Grice. Her career teaching Home Economics spanned 40 plus years with the last 30 spent in Hammon, Oklahoma. She was a member of the United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 40 years. Bertha was a memer of the O.E.A., Retired Teachers Organization and the O.V.A. where she served in all capacities in that State Organization. In 1977 she was Teacher of the Year in Custer County and in 1978 she was Outstanding Teacher of the regional area. She was also a member of the Red Moon Culture Club and the Hammon Garden Club. Bertha enjoyed gardening, knitting and sewing but more than anything she loved her family.
On March 29, 1976 her husband Ed Grice preceded her in death. She was also preceded by her parents, one son David Grice and a sister Elenore Dean.
Bertha is survived by one son Edgar/Eddie Grice and wife Mary, two granddaughters: Lisa Osborn and husband Mike, and Amy Cagle and husband Jason, five great grandchildren: Lindsay Osborn, Baylee Osborn, Trenton Osborn, Kaden Cagle and Briley Cagle all of Morris, and one sister Lela Robinson of Ardmore.
Funeral services celebrating Bertha’s life will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Morris with Reverend Crystal Hughes officiating. Friends may view Bertha at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home in Morris on Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. A second funeral service will be held on Monday, March 12, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Hammon, Oklahoma with Pastor Chuck Gilbert officiating. Interment will follow at the Red Hill Cemetery in Hammon. Casket bearers will be Dorvan Ivey, Cole Ivey, Drew Ivey, Clay Ivey, Dolan Ivey, and Matt Creech.
