Retta "Nanny" Swearingen

Oraetta F. “Retta” Swearingen, known by most as “Nanny”, a longtime Beggs resident, passed away Sunday evening, October 20, 2019 at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa. She was 79 years of age. Retta was born February 22, 1940 in Edna, Oklahoma to the late Otto and Ora (Hereden) Shelton. She attended Okmulgee High School, graduating in 1958. Retta married Jack Webster Swearingen in 1961. She retired after 30 years from Viersen Oil and Gas Company. Retta had been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Retta enjoyed being outdoors. She especially liked riding four-wheelers and fishing. Her and Jack also enjoyed traveling in the motorhome and taking drives in the red car. She enjoyed watching her family rope. Her greatest love was her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, father-in-law, Charlie Scott, mother-in-law Cora Scott, brothers, Paul and Marvin Shelton, brothers-in-law, Francis (Buddy), L.A. and Frank Swearingen, sisters-in-law, Kay Davis and Sandy Swearingen and a nephew Steve Davis. Survivors include a daughter, Shari Simpson and husband Leonard of Morris, son, Bruce Swearingen and wife Cindy of Beggs, grandchildren, Dale Simpson and wife Kristin of Bentonville, Arkansas, Amber Simpson of Morris, Trey Simpson of Norman, Kaitlin Rouk and husband Jay of Beggs, Kassidy Burden and husband Ace of Weleetka and Shiann Swearingen and Derek Soles of Mannford, great grandchildren, Jackson and Hudson Simpson, Hailey and Cooper Rouk, and Kord Burden, nieces, Julie Davis Carr and husband David of Corpus Christi, Texas, Trish Story and husband Larry of Beggs and Peggy Steele and husband Kendall of Mason and a nephew, Scott Davis and wife Terri of Beggs. She is also survived by her many friends at the lake. A service to celebrate Retta’s life will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, October 25, 2019 at the Crossroads Baptist Church with Reverend Brayden Buss officiating. Honorary casketbearers will be Erik Wetzel, Jack Branson, Evert Boak, Tyson Baughn, Josh Hamilton, Scott Davis, Dexter Scanlin, Ron Ballard, Snuffy Ross, David Curry and Johnny Hereden. Arrangements and cremation services have been entrusted to the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Beggs.
