Olen C. McKay

Olen Carter McKay, 92, Passed from this life January 26, 2013, at Okmulgee Hospital. He was the first of five boys born to G.W. (George Washington) and Bertha Deora (Latch) McKay of Beggs, Oklahoma. Alma Louise Hurt fell in love with Olen and they were married on August 26, 1940. Six children were born to this unity. Olen served his country with the US Army from August 1944 - December 1945. A 67 year delayed presentation of Olen's War Service Medals, including the Bronze Star, were presented to him in November of 2012 at a Veteran's Day Program at Schulter School. Olen was proud to be a Veteran, remarking that his service wasn't anything special, he just did what his country asked him to do. While farming, Olen was also employed with ODOT for 17 years and retired in 1981. He especially loved working his Dairy and Farm for many years until age forced him to give up the lifelong work of farming. Though he could not continue to care for livestock, he still enjoyed going outside to look at his son-in-law's cattle and chickens as well as giving direction to how things could be done differently. Preceding Olen McKay in death were his parents, his wife Alma, infant daughter Naoma, sons Donald and Larry, brother Jim McKay, grandson-in-law James Howard and daughter-in-law Kathryn (Hopkins-McKay) Danner. Carrying on Olen's legacy are Son Bob McKay and wife Alene of Kellyville; Daughter Deora and husband Tom of California; Daughter Sharon and husband Ed Allen of Rural Henryetta; Daugther-in-law Tammy McKay of Rural Henryetta; Brother Lowell McKay and wife Molly of Tulsa; O.J. McKay and wife Margie of Henryetta; Doyle McKay of Broken Arrow; 12 Grandchildren and numerous Great Grand Children. Pallbearers: Leon Hiett, Bobby McKay, Kyle McKay, Andrew McKay, Ed Allen and Tom Borgstadt. Olen will be greatly missed by his friends and family. Everyone that knew him also knew that the was a man of strong faith. He was always willing to share God's words. His family takes comfort in knowing that Olen and Alma are walking together while enjoying their favorite pastime of worshiping the Lord and singing gospel songs. A "Going Away Celebration" of Olen's life will be held at Morris Assembly of God Church at 2:00pm on Thursday, January 31st, 2013. Pastor Claud McGee will officiate. Burial will be alongside Alma at Morris Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday 1-8 pm with the family being present to greet 5:30-7:30pm. at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home in Okmulgee.
