Mavis Gill Shoemake

Mavis Gill Shoemake, longtime Okmulgee County resident, died in Okmulgee on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. She was 98 years of age. Mavis was born in rural Okmulgee County on May 29, 1913 to John and Bertha (Gill) Harbison. On January 27, 1934 she married Luther Preston Shoemake in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Mavis enjoyed doing embroidery and cooking. She loved to feed family and friends and while pies were her specialty, her fried chicken was everyone’s favorite. Her family meant everything to her. Mavis was a member of the Evening Star Home Extension Club and the Eastern Star. She was a OMH Pink Lady volunteer, a charter member of the Morris Lioness Club and also the Trinity Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Luther on January 13, 2003, her son Don Shoemake, twin infant granddaughters Karen and Sharon, and a brother Max Harbison. Mavis is survived by daughter-in-law Nancy Shoemake of Drumright, Oklahoma, grandson Steven Shoemake and wife Kristie of Jenks, Oklahoma, great granddaughter Kasey, great grandchildren twins: Adam and Emily, grandson Dr. Stuart Shoemake and wife Trisha of Drumright, Oklahoma, great grandsons Ryan and Aaron, son Max Shoemake and wife Phyllis of Morris, Oklahoma, granddaughter Kristy Huckabee and husband Willie of McAlister, Oklahoma, great grandsons Braxton and Brady Huckabee and wife Jenni, great great granddaughter Kinsley, great grandson Will Huckabee, grandson Kevin Shoemake and wife Nancy of Franklin, Tennessee, great grandsons Brighten and Connor, son Jerry Shoemake and wife Lynda of Morris, Oklahoma, and sister Lyda Henderson of Houston, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at the Trinity Baptist Church in Morris with Reverend Robert Kerr officiating. Interment will follow at the Morris Cemetery. Casket bearers are Steven Shoemake, Stuart Shoemake, Ryan Shoemake, Willie Huckabee, Kevin Shoemake and Brighten Shoemake. Friends may view Mavis at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home in Okmulgee on Friday from 11:00 – 8:00 P.M. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Don Shoemake Scholarship Fund(in care of Sharon Freeman at Morris High School), or the Trinity Baptist Church.
