Lucy Leona Moore

Lucy Leona Moore was born on Mother’s Day, May 10, 1953, Okmulgee, Ok. into a large Creek Indian family. She was the fourth child of Jane and Glenn Moore and the baby of the family. Lucy grew up on the Half Moon Ranch where she spent much of her time with her parents, grandmother Leona Moore, brother Dee Dee (Glenn), sister Marcy, sister Susie, and various cousins and extended relatives including Kelly Moore, with whom she spent many hours playing dress up. She also spent a good deal of time avoiding her pet pig or rather her adversary, “Mr. Bacon.” She also spent time with her Sumpter branch of the family which included various cousins, particularly Sharon, Billy and Kathy who resided in Tulsa. Kathy and Lucy were the same age, and although Kathy passed away prematurely, Lucy never forgot her and spoke of her often. Lucy attended Morris Public Schools where she participated in cheerleading and band. During her time at Morris, the school discontinued band classes and her parents, Jane and Glenn decided to have their children take music lessons, beginning with piano. One day when Lucy was taking a piano lesson and the teacher asked what key a particular note was in, Lucy responded with “R.“ Her siblings overheard this and began to laugh. This sparked Lucy’s determination to show her siblings that she could become a very fine musician. Eventually while Lucy was still in high school, Morris began a new band program and thus, she became a member of the Morris Eagles HS Marching Band. She was taught to play the alto sax by her father Glenn. She spent many hours practicing and playing under the Friday night lights at football games. She graduated from Morris Highschool in 1971. After high school she followed in the footsteps of both of her parents and 3 siblings and attended Oklahoma State University. While attending OSU, Lucy auditioned for the Oklahoma State Marching Band. She made the cut and marched for the Cowboys for the next four years. She graduated from OSU with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education in 1975. That same year Lucy enlisted in the United States Navy. This was uncommon for women of that period, which made Lucy an elite member of a pivotal time period in which women began establishing themselves in positions outside of their traditional roles. To further her interest in music while serving her country, Lucy was a member of the Navy Recruiting Band in which she played the alto saxophone and clarinet. She was stationed in Rhode Island and assigned to Tank MU3 duty. She completed four years of service and was discharged with the rank of Ensign Musician on December 17, 1979. Upon the completion of her naval service, she returned to Oklahoma and made the decision to reside in Tulsa. Lucy began a career as an Executive Secretary for the Muskogee Creek Nation Gaming Board. Much of Lucy’s personal life at this time was spent at family events, holidays and leisure activities with her large immediate and extended family, that included her parents, siblings and their spouses, and seven nieces and nephews. Lucy was also a member of the Glenn Moore Orchestra during this time. In addition, Lucy decided to pick up a new instrument-the violin. She then furthered her musical pursuits by joining the Tulsa Community College orchestra. She performed as a violinist in this orchestra for the next 2 years. Lucy retired from the Creek Nation in 2023 and also eventually retired from music performance, but never lost her passion or love for music. She continued to play the violin, saxophone and piano in her spare time. During family gatherings, one could always count on Lucy and her siblings to play the piano and/or sing. Music was a constant throughout her life and a common interest between her and her family. Lucy was preceded in death by her parents Glenn and Jane Moore of Morris, Ok., her brother Glenn “Dee Dee” Moore of Tulsa, Ok., and her niece Bianca Hayes of Broken Arrow, Ok. Lucy is survived by her sister Marcy Moore of Broken Arrow, Ok., her sister Susie Brown of Tulsa, Ok., her sister-in-law Gail Moore of Tulsa, Ok., John Hayes of Broken Arrow, Ok. and his children with Lucy’s niece Bianca Hayes, nephew William Moore and wife Stacey of Tulsa, Ok. and their children, nephew Matt Duvall and wife Heather of Tulsa, Ok. and their children, niece Glenda Bressler and husband Doug of Haskell, Ok. and their children, nephew John Brown and wife Julie of Washington DC and their children, nephew Paul Brown and wife Laura of Las Vegas NV. and their children, nephew David Brown and wife Kim of Pinehurst, North Carolina and their son and various great nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at the Morris Cemetery on October 20, 2025 at 11:00 A.M.
